Join us for a generative writing workshop with acclaimed writer and artist Khairani Barokka, exploring disbelief placed on the unwell body.
As an extension of Okka’s Disregarding Disbelief Project workshops for the University of Liverpool with other disbelieved ill Muslim women, this 90-minute workshop reshapes disbelief placed on the unwell body through re-imagining art and writing possibilities and landscapes of belief.
Writing exercises will include writing to future historians; writing as future ancestors; and writing about how our bodymind's lives should be interpreted, against misinterpretation. Participants will experiment as the architects of their individual and collective landscapes, and create art and writing to reframe how the unwell body is understood in a continuum beyond the medical sphere.
About the facilitator
Khairani Barokka is a writer and artist from Jakarta, based in London. Okka’s work has been presented widely internationally, and centres disability justice as anticolonial praxis and environmental justice, and access as translation. She holds a PhD by Practice in Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London. Among her honours, she has been a UNFPA Indonesian Young Leader Driving Social Change, a Delfina Foundation Associate Artist, an Artforum Must-See, and Associate Artist at the UK’s National Centre for Writing. In 2023, Okka was shortlisted for an Asian Women of Achievement Award, and longlisted for the Loewe/Studio Voltaire Awards. Her books include Indigenous Species (Tilted Axis), Rope (Nine Arches), and Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back (as co-editor; Nine Arches). Okka's latest books are Ultimatum Orangutan (Nine Arches), shortlisted for the 2022 Barbellion Prize, 2024's amuk (Nine Arches), longlisted for the Jhalak Poetry Prize, and her 2025 speculative nonfiction debut, Annah, Infinite (Tilted Axis).

This event will include comfort breaks every half an hour, autogenerated captions, and live BSL interpretation upon request. You are welcome to take part with cameras on or off, and to communicate through chat, voice or not at all, depending on what is best for you at the time. This programme will be running on Crip Time. As a result, we endeavour to reschedule events should any of our contributors not feel well / experience a change in capacity in the lead up to and / or on the day of the event itself.
